Why We Built an “Add to Calendar” Tool for Our Squarespace Clients
Every so often, the same request lands on our desk from completely different clients — a yoga studio, a supper-club restaurant, a nonprofit running a gala. Different businesses, same sentence: “Can people click a button and add our event to their calendar?”
It’s a reasonable thing to want. When someone’s interested in your event, the window to lock in their attendance is right then — while they’re looking at the page. If they have to remember the date, open their calendar app, and re-type everything themselves, most of them simply won’t. A one-tap “Add to Calendar” button closes that gap. It’s a small thing that has an outsized effect on how many people actually show up.
Here’s the problem we kept running into: Squarespace 7.1 doesn't have a real one. Its Events pages can surface small Google and iCal export links, but there's no styled Add to Calendar button — and nothing at all on regular pages. The workarounds we tried over the years — hand-coding calendar links, bolting on third-party widgets — were either fragile, ugly, or came with a monthly subscription and someone else’s branding stuck to our client’s site.
So we did the thing we tend to do when a gap keeps costing our clients: we built the fix ourselves.
It’s called CalButton. It adds a native Add to Calendar block right into the Squarespace 7.1 editor — the kind of thing that should have shipped with the platform. You fill in the event details, and it generates a brand-matched button that works across Google, Apple, Outlook, Office 365, Yahoo, and .ics. No code per event, no monthly fee, and it doesn’t track anyone’s visitors.
We use it on our own client projects now, and it’s quietly become one of those tools we don’t think about anymore because it just works.
